LyondellBasell Industries’ Healthcare Applications business unit is exclusively dedicated to addressing the specialized needs of the healthcare industry. The business unit markets and sells Purell polyethylene and polypropylene resins which are currently produced in Europe and Asia. With the establishment of the production of Purell resins in the United States in 2009, LyondellBasell will become the first polyolefins supplier to establish a truly global healthcare business unit.
Purell resins are used by customers for healthcare applications worldwide. The resins feature characteristics such as long-term supply, consistent formulation, customized logistics and pharmacopoeia compliance certificates. Most leading medical and pharmaceutical companies have production sites throughout the world, and require material consistency from locally-sourced materials within regional markets. Following the merger of Basell and Lyondell, the new company has strategically-located supply facilities that target uniformity of specifications, no matter where customers are located.

LyondellBasell expects commercialization of its Purell PE1840H, Purell PE3020D and Purell PE3220D resins, produced in Morris, IL, in the first half of 2009. Purell PE1840H is an LDPE grade used for all types of ampoules, the latter ones are used by customers for IV bottles. Leading pharmaceutical companies use these grades on a global basis for more than 30 years. Projects have been opened to evaluate the production of further polyethylenes and polypropylenes for use in healthcare applications in the U.S.
