European confectionery maker Cadbury presents its “Hollywood Sphere” chewing gum line in a package that reinforces brand identity at the point of sale. The “crystal ball” motif creates the visual appeal that is increasingly important in the competitive business world of candy and gum.
To create the desired level of excitement in the package, French plastics converter Millet Marius uses a Metocene polypropylene resin from LyondellBasell. The homopolymer PP was selected because it combines high stiffness and excellent transparency. “We were looking for a designer polypropylene,” explains Pascal Foucher, purchasing manager at the injection molder, “with the purity required for food packaging.”

Testing revealed that the Metocene resin produced an exceptionally clear, high-gloss surface in a package stiff enough for the consumer environment. The narrow molecular-weight distribution of the material made possible the glossy finish. And the lower melting point of the chosen material, compared with that of standard homopolymer PP, improved the molder’s productivity by reducing cycle time.
The complete package of performance and processing properties makes the selection of this Metocene polypropylene all the sweeter for Cadbury.
